UN-Habitat presents work on Safer Settlements in Myanmar
Since engagement on shelter recovery and reconstruction after the Cyclone Nargis, UN-Habitat is promoting safer construction practices through developing various guidelines and trainings of artisans jointly with the Ministry of Construction, Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, Myanmar Engineering Society, UN agencies, INGOs and LNGOs.
Capitalizing the opportunity to address safer settlements as part of development interventions under the broader reform process initiated by the New Government in 2011, UN-Habitat with partners is currently working on formulation of Myanmar National Building Code through Myanmar Engineering Society under the overall guidance of Ministry of Construction.
Those initiatives were presented at the 6th Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction during the Session “Promoting and Institutionalizing Safer Settlements in Myanmar”.
